Celebrating the partners helping us build better, more sustainable transport.
At Transport Design International and Greenway Initiative, we highly value collaboration. From concept and design through to delivery, our work relies on strong partnerships with suppliers who share our values around quality and innovation.
Who are Transcal:
Founded in 1980 and based in Livingston, Scotland, Transcal is a multisector engineering and manufacturing company with decades of experience delivering high quality solutions across rail, automotive, aerospace, marine and defence sectors.
With a strong reputation for precision manufacturing and technical expertise in automotive interiors and beyond, Transcal has built its business on adaptability, supporting complex projects while maintaining consistently high standards.
Transcal’s role in rail:
Transcal’s Rail division has established itself as a leading supplier within the rail industry, delivering interior solutions with fully compliant, durable, and luxurious seating.
They work with industry leaders, offering design, installation, engineering, manufacturing and aftercare services that keep passengers comfortable and satisfying the most stringent industry standards.
A standout example of Transcal’s innovation is the Aerolite seat, a lightweight rail seat manufactured with aerospace aluminium, designed to satisfy the need for a slimmer and more durable option but not sacrificing comfort while also complying with the industry demands.
What makes Transcal different:
What truly distinguishes Transcal is their end-to-end capability as a concept-to-creation supplier, offering an extensive range of design and soft-trim services in addition to fabrication, welding, material handling, pressing, and laser cutting – with painting and finishing also completed in-house.
This approach enables consistent quality control throughout the process and allows Transcal to meet demanding industry standards and deliver tailored solutions efficiently across sectors including defence and transport.
Working together:
Our partnership with Transcal reflects a shared commitment to building better transport solutions. Their expertise supports our work in developing lightweight rail solutions that are designed to reconnect communities while reducing environmental impact through the Greenway Initiative.
Trusted suppliers like Transcal play a crucial role in turning ambitious ideas into real world solutions. By working closely together, we make sure the design works and can be built efficiently and to a high standard.
Projects we’ve worked on:
Our partnership with Transcal has extended across a range of high profile and innovative projects
One of the most visible examples is our Revolution Very Light Rail (RVLR) project, where Transcal manufactured the ‘Aerolite’ seating for our vehicle. The ‘Aerolite’ seating project was another example of work that TDI collaborated with Transcal on. The development and launch of the seating, a lightweight, aluminium based commuter seating solution pushes the boundaries of passenger comfort.

Additionally, our work on the upgrade of Cornish Riviera sleeper trains for Great Western Railway, saw us create mock ups of the new designs and had us work with Transcal to deliver interior furniture for the refurbished restaurant car.

What the future holds:
We are grateful for the work Transcal does and excited to continue our collaboration. As TDI and Greenway Initiative continue to grow, partnerships like this remain essential. Supporting UK manufacturing, collaborating and sharing expertise across the rail industry will be key to delivering the next generation of sustainable transport.
